Of all the changes that users noticed in Windows 11, the fact that the drag and drop function was not working was something that caught their attention the most. This feature has been part of the Windows ecosystem for a long time, and based on feedback, users are unhappy with its discontinuation.

A feature that we all rely heavily on is missing from Windows 11. Users thought it was a bug in the initial release, but Microsoft was quick to acknowledge that the feature had been removed.

Other taskbar-related changes include the inability to launch Task Manager from the right-click context menu and dragging applications onto the taskbar to create their shortcut.

So what are you doing? Some workarounds might give you similar results and we have listed them all in the following sections. Otherwise, you can get used to the new interface and perform tasks accordingly.

Has Microsoft permanently disabled drag and drop in Windows 11?

After several users raised the issue of drag and drop not working in Windows 11, Microsoft posted an answer:

Dragging a file in an app onto the taskbar to open it in that app is currently not supported in Windows 11, but we appreciate all your feedback and will continue to use it to guide future features like this -this..

Based on that statement, we can expect a drag and drop somewhere from Microsoft, but for now it should be self-contained.

What can I do if drag and drop does not work in Windows 11?

1. Use the alternative + Tongue shortcut

  1. Navigate to the location where the file/folder you want to move is saved.
  2. Select it, hold down the left mouse button and drag the file a bit.select drag and drop file in windows 11
  3. With the file still grabbed, press the button alternative + Tongue keys to display all open applications in the taskbar. See all open windows
  4. This will open a new screen where all your open apps will be listed as separate tiles. The currently open or last opened window will appear first, the previous one will appear next, and the same sequence will follow.
  5. Now, while holding the alternative Press the key Tongue to navigate through open windows.
  6. Exit alternative when the desired destination is selected.Release Alt on the desired destination
  7. Once the destination window is open, release the left mouse button to drop the file.Release left click to drop file in Windows 11

This way, you can easily move files between apps and get rid of drag and drop not working issue.

Although it will take you some time to familiarize yourself with the process, once you complete this phase, you will find this method convenient and quick. Just train for a while until you get a skill for it.

2. Open both windows in split screen

  1. Launch the two windows between which you want to drag and drop the file or folder.
  2. Open the file where the drag and drop file is saved, hover over the Maximize button and select the first option to fit the current window to half the screen.Drag and drop split screen in Windows 11
  3. In the other half you will find a list of all additional open applications. Select where you want to place the file/folder.select the other window for the split screen
  4. Now select the file to move. Hold down the left mouse button, drag the file through the windows and release the click when you get to the other one.drag and drop file
  5. The file will now be moved to the destination.

The split screen method in Windows 11 works great if you just need to move files between two locations. In the case above, we have taken two File Explorer windows, however, you can replace one or both of them with other applications. This is a quick solution to the annoying drag and drop problem.

For some apps, there may be an additional confirmation box to complete the drag-and-drop procedure. Choose the correct answer and be done.

3. Use copy-paste

  1. Start the program in which the file to be moved is stored.
  2. Right click on it and select To cutor according to the procedure for that particular program.Cut Files Instead of Drag and Drop in Windows 11
